Despite James Cook showing up for the Buffalo Bills’ mandatory minicamp, things remain complicated between the running back and the team. It’s important to note that Cook is entering the final year of his contract, and the Bills have not shown strong interest in extending the deal for the back who has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in each of the last two seasons.
Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen are warned by Lamar Jackson about what is going to happen next season
In fact, last season – aside from Josh Allen – Cook was without question the team’s best player. He surpassed 1,000 rushing yards and totaled 16 rushing touchdowns plus 8 receiving touchdowns. That’s why, according to reports, Cook is seeking a contract worth more than $15 million per season.
If the Bills were to offer Cook a deal of that size, he would become the highest-paid running back behind only stars Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles and Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers. This saga still has many chapters left to unfold.
The Buffalo Bills are preparing Ray Davis, their second running back option
It’s being reported that, even if the Bills don’t give Cook a contract extension, he will take the risk and play out the 2025 season with the team. However, just in case, the Bills are starting to give more attention and importance to Ray Davis, who is entering his second year in the NFL.
Davis was the second option last season and did a solid job. He appeared in all 17 games and recorded 631 yards from scrimmage with six touchdowns. Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady has praised Davis’s development.
“I think your second year playing in the NFL, just going through the offseason is critical,” said offensive coordinator Joe Brady. “For a guy like Ray, who is very detail-oriented and wants to be a perfectionist, it’s been really beneficial for him to take a step back, evaluate how he played last year, watch the tape, and learn the running back position at a deeper level.”
Despite the ongoing James Cook drama, the Bills chose not to select a running back in this year’s draft, even though they had the opportunity. That decision suggests that the front office and coaching staff believe Ray Davis can take a step forward and become a bigger part of the offense.
