April 19, 2025 – Buffalo, NY — In a move that is sure to thrill football fans across the nation, Netflix has just announced its latest exclusive documentary project—an in-depth, emotional, and inspiring look at the life and legacy of one of the NFL’s most iconic franchises: the Buffalo Bills.
Titled “Bills Mafia: Heart of a City”, the documentary will explore the rich history of the Buffalo Bills, from their formation in 1960 as a member of the American Football League, through their historic four consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the early 1990s, to their recent resurgence as one of the league’s top contenders. The series promises to be more than just a sports story—it will be a celebration of resilience, loyalty, and community spirit.
“This is not just a story about football,” said Rachel Martin, Executive Producer at Netflix Sports Originals. “It’s a story about a city that has weathered storms—both literally and figuratively—and a fanbase that defines what true loyalty looks like. The Buffalo Bills aren’t just a team; they’re a way of life.”
The documentary is set to include rare archival footage, exclusive interviews with past and present players, coaches, and NFL insiders, as well as emotional first-hand accounts from diehard Bills fans, affectionately known as the “Bills Mafia.” Among the voices featured in the series are Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas, current stars Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs, head coach Sean McDermott, and even celebrity fans like actor Christopher McDonald and musician Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik.
Fans can expect an unfiltered look at the team’s journey through triumphs and heartbreaks. The series will delve into iconic moments in franchise history, including “The Comeback” against the Houston Oilers in 1993, the bitter Super Bowl losses, the infamous “Music City Miracle,” and the franchise’s long-awaited playoff resurgence in the 2020s.
A particularly emotional segment of the documentary will pay tribute to beloved Bills fans and former players who passed away, and it will spotlight the community’s support during the 2022 Damar Hamlin incident, showcasing how the team and fans came together in a moment of crisis.
Production has been underway for several months, with a crew embedded in Buffalo during the 2024 NFL season. Netflix confirmed the series will premiere globally in September 2025, just in time for the kickoff of the new NFL season. It is expected to be a multi-part series, with each episode running around 45–60 minutes.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown responded to the news, calling it “a major cultural moment for the city.” He added, “This documentary will shine a light on not just our team, but our people—how deeply we care, how hard we fight, and how proud we are of Buffalo.”
As streaming services continue to expand their presence in the world of sports storytelling, “Bills Mafia: Heart of a City” is poised to be a standout entry in the genre. It’s not just for football fans—it’s for anyone who believes in perseverance, pride, and the power of community.
