In a stunning turn of events at the PGA Tour’s annual Challenge Cup, Rickie Fowler was forced to issue an apology to LPGA star Nelly Korda after his incredible albatross shot on the 17th hole sparked controversy.
Fowler’s miraculous 3-iron shot from 255 yards out landed in the hole for a rare double eagle, but Korda, playing in the group ahead, claimed the ball flew perilously close to her playing partner, narrowly avoiding a potentially serious injury.
“I was in shock,” Korda said in a post-round interview. “I’ve never seen a ball travel that far, that fast. I’m just glad no one was hurt.”
Fowler, visibly shaken by the incident, immediately sought out Korda to apologize. “I’ve never felt so bad about making a great shot,” he admitted. “I know how dangerous the game can be, and I’m truly sorry for putting anyone at risk.”
The incident has sparked debate about course safety and player responsibility, with some calling for increased safety measures and others praising Fowler’s sportsmanship.
Despite the drama, Fowler’s impressive shot helped him secure a share of second place, three strokes behind leader Viktor Hovland. Korda, meanwhile, finished T-10 in the mixed-field event.
As for Fowler, he’s looking forward to moving past the incident. “Golf’s a game of inches,” he reflected. “Sometimes those inches can be heart-stopping.”
