Chiefs eye new All-Pro running mate for Patrick Mahomes amid Travis Kelce’s decline

The Chiefs will be active in free agency, with several players’ futures in the air

Kansas City Chiefs are going to be among the most fascinating teams to watch given the salary cap constraints they are facing. The three-time defending AFC champions just lost Super Bowl LIX in embarrassing fashion to the Philadelphia Eagles, and improvements — specifically on the Patrick Mahomes-run offense — will be needed if the Chiefs want to reach the big game again in 2025.

Kansas City has been buoyed by the news that legendary tight end Travis Kelce will return next season, but Kelce endured the worst statistical season of his career in 2024 and could be facing a reduced role. The Chiefs may be bargain-hunting as is, and one potential shrewd move they could make might help them reach Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, Calif.

Chiefs to make a move for Stefon Diggs?

According to Aaron Schatz over at ESPN, the Chiefs might be an ideal landing spot for 2025 bounceback candidate Stefon Diggs, a former All-Pro receiver for Kansas City’s AFC rivals, the Buffalo Bills. Diggs spent the 2024 season with the Houston Texans, but he had been out several weeks with a season-ending knee injury by the time the Texans visited the Chiefs in the AFC playoffs’ divisional round.

“With a number of free agent wide receivers ready to depart, the Chiefs need a veteran who can play on the outside opposite Xavier Worthy after Rashee Rice returns to the slot,” Schatz wrote. “Diggs should be recovered for the start of the 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL in Week 8. He had a positive DVOA for the Texans before his injury and was on pace for another 1,000-yard season.”

Diggs has racked up more than 10,000 receiving yards in his 10-year career, and he recorded at least 1,000 yards in six straight seasons between 2018 and 2023. The 31-year-old was notably on the losing side three times when the Bills played the Chiefs in the playoffs in 2020, 2021, and 2023; as such, he has never played in a Super Bowl, and joining Kansas City could be his best chance to do so.

DeAndre Hopkins, another veteran wideout, learned last year that a Super Bowl opportunity is more than tangible when Mahomes is your quarterback. So it remains to be seen whether Diggs arrives at the same conclusion when the free agent frenzy kicks off in nine days’ time.
