Billy Horschel suggests unorthodox solution to the PGA Tour-LIV Golf issue – “We need to create a pyramid scheme” 

Billy Horschel has a solution to unify the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The 37-year-old, active on the American circuit, stated that golf is currently in the deepest competitive spot it’s ever been. Following this, the golfer suggested his idea to unify the conflicting sides and thus, improve the sport.

In a recent interview, Horschel revealed considering the creation of a ‘global tour’ structure. Reflecting on the conversations from years ago between entities, the PGA star said the sport could benefit from a “pyramid scheme” where the top players come together to compete. He claimed the creation of a tour that sits at the top of other circuits, with 20 to 25 events hosted worldwide, would diversify the sport.

Suggesting that he’d well thought it out, Horschel added that the said elite tour could take top players from the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour alike and put them in a top-tier competition. He also claimed the move would financially support other circuits like the Korn Ferry Tour.

Discussing the idea of ‘unifying golf,’ Billy Horschel said on the Fairways of Life with Matt Adams Golf Show (at 26:26):

“I believe we need to create maybe like a pyramid scheme or a pyramid. I think we need to create one big tour at the top that’s a global tour play probably have 20-22 maybe 25 events around the world from there you feed down to probably the PGA tour and DP World Tour.

Let’s say you have 100 players in that top or 120 in that top one whatever that number is you feed 15 up from both the PGA tour and then the DP World Tour below them you have the Korn Ferry tour and the challenge tour you have to prop those tours up financially… That’s what I would love to see, I would love to see maybe a little bit more global schedule.”

Billy Horschel urges golfers to travel outside the US

Having suggested a possible solution for the ongoing PGA Tour – LIV Golf divide, Billy Horschel went on to take a swipe at players who don’t travel outside the USA. The eight-time PGA Tour winner, who is a regular on the European circuit, claimed that all players should compete outside America if they want to be “considered a truly global and world player.”

Horschel noted that the players who don’t compete outside aren’t ‘truly global players’ and are in the ‘comfort zone’ of US soil. He went on to take a jibe at LIV Golf and added that the phrase ‘growing the game’ is ‘used way too much’ by people who don’t travel as much outside.

Billy Horschel said:

“When I when I hear players that say they’re or people say they’re global players that don’t really travel, they’re not really truly global players. They are really good in the US and not saying they’re not going to be great outside the US but they haven’t traveled to play outside their comfort zone…

I don’t fault anyone for not wanting to travel outside the US. But I think for the game of golf and I think growing the game is used way too much in my opinion. I like to say give back to the game. Golf has given me so much that I just give back.”

 

Billy Horschel reiterated his wish to see a ‘global tour’ that would allow golf to be played across the globe with ‘fans around the world’ embracing the sport.
