The Buffalo Bills happen to be one of those teams. They reached the conference title game last year and have won the last five AFC East titles. But unlike many other contenders, the Bills may have use for their seventh-round pick this year.
And in a role that many in that spot are targeted for.
Maryland wide receiver Kaden Prather was taken by the Bills with the 240th overall selection last week. While he does possess quality skills for any receiver, the Bills expect him to be an immediate contributor on special teams.
“Really down there, you’re going, alright, how does this player make the team? And you’re looking at various positions. And at that point, you’re looking at a lot of guys with similar grades. Where do you want to go?” said general manager Brandon Beane. “He’s big, long, fast, and you feel like some of his stuff will translate to, maybe he could make it as that last guy as a special teamer.”
Prather recorded 162 catches, 1,966 yards, and 12 touchdowns in 48 career college games for both West Virginia and Maryland. He has the size and production to be a project of sorts in Buffalo’s offense.
With so many weapons on the field, though, there isn’t much room for Prather to see playing time. Especially in his first couple of years with the Bills.
His only hope is to make an impact on special teams. And that’s a role Buffalo thinks he can fill.
