Bills head coach Sean McDermott gives injury updates on WR Keon Coleman and the rest after

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott met with the media on Zoom Monday afternoon and provided injury updates on several players, including WR Keon Coleman, DE Dawuane Smoot, WR Amari Cooper and CB Christian Benford.

Smoot left Sunday’s game against Miami with a wrist injury. The defensive end will need surgery and the team is planning to place him on injured reserve, sidelining him for a minimum of four games.

McDermott is hopeful Smoot can return this season but isn’t sure yet. He’ll know more about Smoot’s timeline after surgery.

“Sometimes with IR and surgeries, you’re never sure until the doctors get in there and see what exactly the extent of the injury is or was,” McDermott said.

The Bills coach also confirmed that Coleman suffered a wrist/arm injury at the end of the Dolphins game and the “ongoing evaluation of his situation” will continue this week. McDermott shared that they are still unsure the extent of the injury.

“I’ll know more as we move through the week here,” McDermott said of Coleman. “Just holding out hope one way here or the other, but we’ll see. We’ll see where it goes.”

Cooper and Benford both missed Sunday’s game due to wrist injuries and will be day-to-day heading into the Week 10 practice week. Cooper and Benford were limited in practice last week.

“We’ll see how they do this week, and move forward from there,” McDermott said.

FB Reggie Gilliam is also day-to-day after missing Sunday’s game with a hip injury.

How injuries affect Buffalo’s involvement in trade deadline

Tuesday at 4 p.m. is the NFL Trade Deadline. The Bills have already made one move this season, the Cooper trade on Oct. 15.

McDermott shared that he will leave any roster decisions to general manager Brandon Beane and knows the GM will let him know if the team is making any transactions.

“I’m trying to focus on really honing in on what we need to work on from yesterday’s game, Brandon will usually loop me in if I need to be,” McDermott said. “I trust that if something comes up that will let me know.”
