The Buffalo Bills’ run game in 2025 will make for a fascinating watch.
The Buffalo Bills’ run game in 2025 will be an interesting watch for a host of reasons with one being how James Cook is used in the offense.
Wanting a new contract, Cook and the Bills appear to be far apart on what is acceptable with roughly $15 million APY, and that could mean his future is seen elsewhere in 2026
But with the Bills already agreeing to terms with a host of starters that includes Josh Allen, Greg Rousseau, Christian Benford, Terrel Bernard, and Khalil Shakir, there isn’t much salary cap pie left for Cook.
Now, with our eyes cast towards the 2025 season, there is an interesting dynamic that we think will be fascinating to watch.
Given that Cook will be playing on the final year of his rookie deal, there might be a thought that maybe the Bills will be looking to see what else they have in Ray Davis and Ty Johnson.
That means giving the pair more touches in favor of Cook. How would that be received?
We imagine not well, given that Cook will want as many touches as possible in a contract year to prove he’s worthy of a new deal.

So that is the delicate balancing act that Joe Brady might have to conduct in 2025.
Buffalo must perform a delicate balancing act by giving Cook touches to let him put himself in the shop window and by giving Johnson and Davis more touches to see if they are capable of handling a bigger workload in case the pair are seen as James’ replacements.
Cook’s value to the offense can’t be understated, but when you are looking to pay a running back $15 million APY, that is a lot of money, and Buffalo will want to make sure it makes the right decision.
How this will play out is anyone’s guess, but we might get a good indication when the season starts and see who gets most of the carries.
Cook, who wants a new contract, or a duo who could be seen as his replacement. A delicate balancing act, indeed.
