Rickie Fowler Breaking Years-Long Tradition Sparks Deep Concern Among Golf Fans: ‘OMG’

Every player has his superstition for a game. Take Tiger Woods, for example. No matter what, he wears red on the final day of the events. According to him, it brings him good luck. Similarly, the PGA Tour Rickie Fowler has his practice around the golf course. On Sundays, during every championship he appears in, the golfer wears a bright shade of orange. But what makes him do so?

Rickie Fowler went to Oklahoma State University for his graduation, and played golf as part of the college team, in 2007 and 2008. The Cowboys golf team, eleven-time men’s national champions, uses orange and black as its colors. In 2008, Fowler contributed to Oklahoma State’s golf legacy by winning the prestigious Ben Hogan Award, recognizing him as the top collegiate golfer in the country, as determined by the Friends of Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America. Thus, that is why, in honor and to show how important it is in his golfing career, he wears orange for the final rounds of his matches.

But as it turns out, the year-ending team tradition was a little different this year. Last year, he matched his attire with teammate Lexi Thompson on Sunday at the Tiburon Golf Club. This year Rickie Fowler was not wearing his regular orange attire at the 2024 Grant Thornton Invitational. An X fan page took to their wall and even shared the video. They wrote, “Morning folks. We have a developing situation here in Naples… it is Sunday and Rickie Fowler is not wearing orange.”

We have a developing situation here in Naples… it is Sunday and Rickie Fowler is not wearing orange. 😧

What is the reason Rickie Fowler traditionally wears orange during the final rounds of his golf matches?

This left the entire golf community worried about what might be the reason behind him skipping the tradition.

Fowler has worn orange throughout his professional career, initially sporting it from head to toe. However, he’s toned it down, typically sticking to an orange shirt and shoes or pants in recent times. A notable example of his former all-orange look came at The Barclays in 2013, where he even convinced Jonas Blixt to join him in the bold, head-to-toe orange ensemble. The last time Rickie Fowler did not wear his signature orange on a Sunday was during the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. For the final round, Fowler chose a different outfit, deviating from his usual tradition of wearing orange in honor of Oklahoma State University.

Despite the outfit change, Fowler’s performance did not reflect his usual Sunday color choice, making this a rare exception in his career. After two years, it’s the first time fans spotted him not wearing his regular color. Taking this, while one of them curiously asked, “The first time he’s done that?” While another questioned, “What is going on here”.

The 36 YO golfer has been having one of the worst seasons of his life. In 2024, he appeared at 23 events. And while he ended up missing cuts only for six of them, he failed to grab any wins so far. And well, out of all of them, he has only five top-25 finishes, and one top-10 finish. This has left his fans disappointed, nonetheless. While one of them was concerned about his performance wrote, “Honestly. Maybe it’s time to switch it up”.

Even at the 2024 Grant Thornton Invitational, he failed to put on solid performances. Along with Lexi Thompson, their team finished with a disappointing score of 9-under at T14, which is almost the bottom of the leaderboard. Another mocked him and commented, “Because losers don’t wear orange”.

On the other hand, some fans were just simply shocked. One of them simply wrote, “Omg”. What do you think might be the reason behind him skipping on his regular attire? Let us know in the comments section below!
